Design for the Psychological Habitability of Spacecraft on Extended Exploratory Missions

چکیده

Human performance will be a critical factor in future long duration exploration missions in space, for instance to Mars. In addition to physical risks in a hazardous environment, crew face social and sensory deprivation in a confined, isolated habitat. A key paradigm affecting the mission will be the crew’s autonomy. How can the spacecraft itself support psychological wellbeing through meaningful design intervention? This short paper summarises the first phase of a current study addressing the psychological issues in extended space missions through sensory design. Based on a review of key features in crew habitation found to be psychologically beneficial, it examines terrestrial design approaches that – applied to spacecraft – could yield new insights for the design of human-centred applications.

Habitability and performance issues for long duration space flights.

Advancing technology, coupled with the desire to explore space has resulted in increasingly longer manned space missions. Although the Long Duration Space Flights (LDSF) have provided a considerable amount of scientific research on human ability to function in extreme environments, findings indicate long duration missions take a toll on the individual, both physiologically and psychologically. ...

Microbial contamination of spacecraft.

Spacecraft and space habitats supporting human exploration contain a diverse population of microorganisms. Microorganisms may threaten human habitation in many ways that directly or indirectly impact the health, safety, or performance of astronauts. The ability to produce and maintain spacecraft and space stations with environments suitable for human habitation has been established over 40 year...

Behavioral Health Management of Space Dwelling Groups:

Plans to pursue space expeditionary missions beyond Earth orbit have occasioned renewed concern that crew behavioral health and performance effectiveness, along with spacecraft habitability, will present major challenges to the success of spaceflight initiatives involving unprecedented increases in time and distance on interplanetary voyages. A programmed environment methodological approach tha...

Science Fiction Film as Design Scenario Exercise for Psychological Habitability: Production Designs 1955-2009

Scenario building presents a valuable tool for the development of design concepts for unprecedented long-duration space missions. Aside from quantitative modelling techniques, one medium that routinely illustrates scenarios through speculative but manifested design concepts is science fiction (SF) film. Set and prop design in such films are sometimes the product of consulting, research and deve...

Dynamics of Space Free-Flying Robots with Flexible Appendages

A Space Free-Flying Robot (SFFR) includes an actuated base equipped with one or more manipulators to perform on-orbit missions. Distinct from fixed-based manipulators, the spacecraft (base) of a SFFR responds to dynamic reaction forces due to manipulator motions. In order to control such a system, it is essential to consider the dynamic coupling between the manipulators and the base. Explicit d...
